Two SAABs sandwich a third car during a traditional Folkrace in Sweden.
Folkrace is an inexpensive type of motorsport practiced in Scandinavia. It started in Finland, where it is called Jokamiesluokka (Every Man’s Class), also called Bilcross in Norway (bil means automobile in Norwegian and Swedish), and Folkerace in Denmark.
The races are run on short, 2400 meter long tracks that are a mix of gravel and tarmac, and the course is designed to keep max speed to 80 km/h.
To maintain its inexpensive nature any Folkrace car can be challenged to be put on sale. A fix sale price of 6500 SEK (around $1000) is put on all cars, and after secret bidders decide to bid on a car the buyer is chosen randomly. Refusing to sell a car after the car has been challenged for sale is grounds for revocation of the racer’s license.
This system eliminates the chance that any well off racer will dump loads of money on a car and make it more competitive than the competition. This also ensures that Folkrace cars are nothing more than beaters with a minimum amount of racing safety equipment.
